In September 1947, Newton Kiwanis Club members Lee Van Kymer, Ken Horn, Ted Bernard and Charlie Barbey met with Walter Ungermann, John Hayes and Howard H.Worzel of Sparta. The purpose of the meeting was to form the Sparta Kiwanis Club.  With an initial membership of 39, the Sparta Kiwanis Club was chartered and held its first formal meeting on December 12, 1947 at the Sparta Inn on Main St in Sparta N.J. 

The Club held a Charter Celebration on February 12, 1948 at the Fox Trail Lodge in Sparta with 250 people in attendance (members, family members, and friends).  The Club was incorporated in June 1948.
The Kiwanis Club of Sparta was incorporated in June 1948 with the following members serving as incorporators:  Russell A. Beirle, J. Byrds Mann, Herbert S. Croft, Theodore Pringos, James J. Eidel, Walter Ungermann, John A. Hayes, William W. Walters Jr., John W. Jones, and Howard W. Worzel.

Meetings were held regularly at the Sparta Inn, Thursday evenings, at 7:45 p.m.  Active members were Herbert Croft, James Eidel, William Eppler, John Hayes, Oskar Hillbrandt, John E. Jones, Harver Keiderling, Theodore Pringos, Walter Ungermann, William A. Walters, and Howard Worzel. Over the years, the Kiwanis Club of Sparta has always held its weekly meetings at 7 p.m. at various locations: Sparta Inn, The Central (Nazzaro's), Valley View Inn, The Office, Elks Building,  Francesca's, the Lafayette House and Homer's Restaurant.
